Resolution 1706

Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir said on Monday that the United Nations (U.N.) plan to deploy its peacekeepers in Darfur would put Sudan under the trusteeship of the world body. Sudan’s leader, who was speaking in Ethiopia, reiterated his rejection of the Security Council resolution, which calls for the deployment of some 22,500 U.N. peacekeepers and police to take over the African Union mission in Darfur. "Resolution 1706 of the U.N. Security Council actually confirmed our suspicion because the content of the resolution places Sudan under international trusteeship of the United Nations," Bashir said at a press conference in Addis Ababa. "That plan to transform the peacekeeping job in Darfur from African Union (AU) to United Nations held a hidden agenda aimed at putting Sudan under the United Nations trusteeship." Analysts say part of Sudan's reluctance to allow U.N. peacekeepers into Darfur is a fear the U.N. troops could be used to arrest those eventually charged with war crimes.-(Reuters)

Were the Nuremberg Trials Effective?

Genocides have arguably been the ideological struggle of the tweenith century and that pattern is progressing to the 21st century. The Holocaust, Armenia, Boznia, Cambodia, Rwanda, and now Darfur have forever shamed international response to significant crisis. After the Holocaust and when the concentration camps were liberatedm, a tribunal was established to prosecute Nazi was criminals and those responsible for carrying out vicious crimes. The Nuremberg Trials were suppose to stop genocides like the Holocaust from ever happening again. This has left many people to ask were the Nuremberg trials effective at preventing genocide (the term coined by Raphael Lemkin after the Armenian Genocide) and other atrocities. Considering that even after the United Nations established Crimes Against Peace and Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes so many genocides (Armenia, the Holocaust, Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda) have occured and are continuing to take place (Katrina, Darfur). At the bottom of the page in the comments box answer this question: Were the Nuremberg Trials effective in preventing genocide?

Unresponsiveness:United States' Rationale

Unresponsiveness:United States' Rationale
Darfur has an inhospitable terrain stretching from Darfur to Chad and refugess running away from the genocide are becoming trapped between the Darfur/Chad border. Besides this messy situation, the United States and other countries are facing the other mess of trying to get humanitarian aid into the impoverished area. The Sudanese government backed by China and Russia has denied any humanitarian aid and assistance from other countries. Why? If Sudan accepted aid then that would send the message that there is a genocide, which the Sudan government has immensly denied. The U.S. has been extremely reluctant to act because of their diplomatic and international relationship with China and Russia. Because of this relationship and despite the bills that are flowing through the House and Congress it is very unlikely that the U.S. will act any faster than it already is to stop this genocide.

Darfur's Origin/A Word Game

Darfur is a conflict that is not new. Darfur has been around for far longer than 2003, which is the projected start by the United Nations and the United States. Darfur has gone through a couple civil wars between Christian and Muslim denominations throughout the 1990's. Furthermore, the U.N. is still refraining from calling Darfur a genocide even after the U.S. has finally called the crisis in Darfur a genocide.
