Were the Nuremberg Trials Effective?
Genocides have arguably been the ideological struggle of the tweenith century and that pattern is progressing to the 21st century. The Holocaust, Armenia, Boznia, Cambodia, Rwanda, and now Darfur have forever shamed international response to significant crisis. After the Holocaust and when the concentration camps were liberatedm, a tribunal was established to prosecute Nazi was criminals and those responsible for carrying out vicious crimes. The Nuremberg Trials were suppose to stop genocides like the Holocaust from ever happening again. This has left many people to ask were the Nuremberg trials effective at preventing genocide (the term coined by Raphael Lemkin after the Armenian Genocide) and other atrocities. Considering that even after the United Nations established Crimes Against Peace and Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes so many genocides (Armenia, the Holocaust, Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda) have occured and are continuing to take place (Katrina, Darfur). Were the Nuremberg Trials effective? No. If they were, we wouldn't have Darfur, Bosnia... Those who don't know our world's history -- or those who chose to forget or ignore it -- are doomed to repeat it. And we're doomed to keep fighting the same battles over and over again. Stop the madness.
Indeed. I agree in the fact that the trials were ineffective to a degree. If anything this is just a way for those countries who would commit such an act a way of avoiding it through calling it by another name. The power of language holds a lot of weight in the political world.
